School Holidays End Primary schools in the Greymouth district will resume on Monday following the first-term holidays. The Greymouth Technical High School and the secondary department of the Marist Brothers’ School will not resume until Tuesday.

Hospital Lay-Out The Westland Hospital Board this week decided to enter into a twoyear contract with Mr W. Buchanan, of Greymouth, for the lay-out and maintenance of the hospital grounds. Mr Buchanan also is to supervise the lay-out of the Grey Hospital grounds. The subject of the hospital grounds has been the cause of a controversy in the Hokitika district recently. Police Officers Promoted . The promotion of two senior officers in charge of the Christchurch police district —Acting-Superintend-ent T. E. Holmes and Sub-Inspector G. H. L. Holt—was announced yesterday by the Minister in charge of Police (Mr W. H. Fortune). Mr Holmes, who has been acting-super-intendent since the appointment of Mr J. Bruce Young as Commissioner of Police in April, will now be superintendent, and Mr Holt will be the new inspector. Both will remain in Christchurch. The Minister said that in view of the centennial celebrations of Canterbury, it was desirable to keep both officers stationed in- the city, because of their wide knowledge and experience of the district. Inspector Holt was transferred from Greymouth to Christchurch in 1946. Superintendent Holmes was also stationed at Greymouth some years ago.—(P.A.)
