RETIRING AGE FOR RAILWAYMEN: NO POLICY ALTERATION
WELLINGTON, May 19 (P.A.).— The Minister of Railways (Mr W. S. Goosman) has given an assurance that no consideration has been given to an alteration of the present policy of retirement of staff after 40 years of service in the Railways Department. Mr A. R. Tarr, general secretary of the New Zealand Railway Officers’ Institute, commenting on recent publicity given to existing staff shortages in the railway service, and the possibility that the department was considering a move to encourage its employees voluntarily to remain in their jobs for a period after they had reached the retiring age, said today that he had recently communicated with the Minister on the subject on behalf of the four railway service organisations. He had received the assurance mentioned.
