SALARY INCREASES ARE GRANTED FOR MORE CIVIL SERVANTS
WELLINGTON, November ' 12. (P.A.). —Salary increases for permanent and' temporary civil servants under the Public. Service . Commissions control are announced in a. decision issued by the Government Service Tribunal today. The increases, whigh. are based on the rise of £l3 a year for-adult skilled workers, are retrospective to June .1, 1949. .... This brings the civil servants under Commission control into line with the other sections of the Government service which already have received increases from. June 1. The decision also'“'sets out new salary minimums, fixes travelling and lodging allowances, and brings the range of officers covered by overtime provisions into line with the new salary scale. Scale Of Increases For persons in the service at July 1, 1949, the pay increases from June 1’ 1949, are:— £5 per annum to tho?e whose salaries do not exceed x £297. £8 to those whose salaries exceed £ 297 but do not exceed £4ll. £l3 to those whose salaries exceed £4ll and a halfpenny, Id or Ud an hour,, or Is Bd, 3s 4d, or 5s a week to the employees paid hourly or by a. weekly rate within those salary ranges. The scales of salaries and wages payable to junior labourers and, other unskilled or semi-skilled workers under the age of 21 years,.employed under the Public Service Regulation 150, and apprentices, will be as follows:— (a) Hourly wages for junior labourers and other unskilled or semiskilled workers under the age of 21 years:—ls years of age, Is 7d to Is lOd; 16 years, Is lOd to 2s Id; 17 years 2s Id to 2s 4d; 18 years 2s 3d to 2s 6d; 19 years 2s 5d to 2s 8d; 20 years 2s 9d to 3s. ! (b) Apprentices:—First year, £185; second year, £200; third year, £230; fourth year, £260; fifth year, £300; sixth year £335. General lodging allowance provisions are now as follows: —Annual salary up to £140—£55 allowance; £l65 —£50 allowance; £lB0 —£50 allowance; £l9o—£4o allowance; £2lo—£3o allowance; £225—£25 allowance; £235—£15 allowance. The following minimum rates of remuneration are prescribed: Adult male employees:—£33o per annum; Female employees:—£22s per annum; married male employees:— £361 per annum. The tribunal’s decision - follows an application from the Public Service Commission for authority to apply the £l3 increase to the service. The application was heard at the first sitting of the new tribunal today. More Increases Sought Mr J. P. Lewin (president of Public Service Association), commenting tonight on the wage increase, said that, in accordance with an agreement with the Government, the £l3 a year increase had now been disposed of, and the wider aspirations of the association for increases, ranging from £35 to £75 a year, were yet to be dealt with. The association, said Mr Lewin, would judge the success of its salaries campaign by What came out of the conciliation proceedings, which it was hoped to conclude within the next few days.
