GREYMOUTH SCHOOLS PLAN END-OF-YEAR CLOSING FUNCTIONS
Although information concerning the Marist and Convent schools is not yet available, primary schools in the Grey district will close on Friday, December 16, for the Christmas and end-of-year holidays. It is understood, however, that the Technical School will close a week earlier. Plans for end-of-year prizegiving ceremonies at most schools are well advanced.
It was not the general policy of the school to hold a ceremony apart from the presentation of the Watkins and Seddon Memorial Medals, for which the senior pupils of the school were assembled, stated a member of the teaching staff of the Grey Main School this morning. The procedure adopted at this function was for the names of the first six children in each class to be announced.
The school would break up on. December 16, said Mr L. B. Galbraith, headmaster of the Cobden School, but final arrangements had not yet been made by the school committee regarding this year’s prize-giving ceremonj r . The school held its annual show on the first Saturday in December and it was thought possible that the ceremony would be run in conjunction with it. Last year’s ceremony had been held in Regent Theatre and had been quite. successful, but organisation had caused some difficulties, said the principal of the Technical High School, ' Mi- W. M. Stewart, adding that he had advised the authorities that the school would close down on December 9. He had received no confirmation of this date. Mr Stewart said that it was intended holding this year’s prize-giving function at the school quadrangle. The driector of the Marist School, Brother Maurice, was hot able to say when the school would close down, but he intimated that it would probably be December 9. The usual ceremony would be held in conjunction with the presentation of the Bevilacqua Medals and other prizes.
