FOR FARMERS Sharp Rise In Sheep Prices At Addington

CHRISTCHURCH, This Day (0.C.) Yardings were smaller at the Addington market yesterday, but for an off-day sale it was satisfactory. Fat cattle started weak and eased as the sale progressed, but fat sheep, after a dull start, rose sharply and were two shillings or so above last week’s prices. The.sales for spring lambs and fat hoggets were very good, and prices were dearer. STORE SHEEP—The hogget entry was of moderate quality, and prices did not show much change. Two pens of good crossbred ewe hoggets in the wool made 49s and 49s 6d, and good shorn ewe hoggets made 33s to 39s 6d, and ordinary from 29s 6d to 325. Good shorn wether hoggets made 31s to 36s 6d and ordinary from 24s 6d to 30s. Only five pens of ewes and lambs were offered. Medium woolly lines made to 23s and shorn to 225. The wether offering included some sizeable lines. Prices were 34s to 37s for good lots, and 30s to 32s for others. SPRING LAMBS—Though the entry was a considerable one, it met stron°' competition and values vvere at least ° two shillings better . than last week The best quality realised from 41s to, 44s 7d, good 37s to 40s, and medium and light 33s to 365. FAT HOGGETS—The sale was inclined to be erratic. Medium and light sorts were not in demand, and values remained about on a par. The best of the yarding made from 45s to 51s 7d, good 38s to 445, and medium and light 30s to 375. FAT SHEEP.—The sale began slowly, and the less attractive sheep were difficult to quit. About midway through the sale, a brisk demand set in, arid prices rose sharply for all classes by fully 4s a head. Values were:—Extra prime heavy wethers, to 55p Id; prime heavy wethers, 40s 6d to 475; prime medium-weight wethers. 33s 6d to 39s 6d; ordinary and light wethers, 25s to 325; extra prime ewes, to 39s Id; prime ewes, 32s to 35s 6d; prime mediumweight ewes, 27s to 31s 6d; ordinary and light ewes, 21s to 265. FAT CATTLE. —The sale started off rather shakily, but steadied later at from £1 to 25s a head below last week’s rates for steers and heifers. Best beef made to 80s per 1001 b, good 50s to 60s, medium to 47s 6d, best cow to 57s 6d, and secondary cow to 40s. Values were: —Extra prime heavy steers, to £36 7s 6d; extra prime steers, £24 to £2B; prime medium weight steers, £lB to £23 10; ordinary and light steers, £l4 to £l7 10s- extra prime heifers, to £26 7s 6a; uHme heifers, £l3 10s to £l9 10s; ordinary and light heifers, £7 10s to £l3: extra prime cows, to £27 17s 6d; prime cows, £ll 10s to £l7 10s; ordinary and plain cows, £7 to £lO 10s. VEALERS— Competition was not keen and prices were about on a par with last week to a shade lower. Prime large runners made to £l4 Is, others £7 18s 6d to £lO 18s 6d, best suckers £7 Is to £9 3s 6d, medium £3 18s 6d to £5 13s 6d large calves 45s to 60s, medium calves 28s to 40s, and small and rough down to 17s. STORE CATTLE.—The demand was steady and prices were about on late rates. Among the quotable lines sold were ;—Seven rising four-year Aber-deen-Angus steers in forward condition at £l9 is to £l9 7s, 10 two-year Hereford steers in backward condition at £l9 Is, 20 yearling Aberdeen Angus steers at £8 to £lO Is, eight yearling Shorthorn steers at £9 8s 6d, 20 rising 18-months Aberdeen-Angus steers at £6 18s to £8 6s, 10 two-year AberdeenAngus steers in low condition at £lO Is, and 12 backward Aberdeen-Angus heifers at £4 Is to £6 Ils. DAIRY CATTLE.—Over the whole sale prices were on a par and a shade easier for rough cattle. Best second, third, and fourth calvers made from £l4 10s to £lB, medium £lO 10s to £l3 10s, aged and inferior £6 10s to £lO. Best heifers realised £l4 to £l7, with one sale at £27 10s, medium £lO to £l3 IGs, and small and inferior £6 IQs to £9 10s. FAT PlGS—Over the first half prices were fully firm, but later they improved by 4s to 6s a head. Choppers were yarded in much smaller numbers, but values showed little change. Values were:—Light porkers. £4 9s 6d to £5 2s 6d; medium porkers, £5 9s 6d to £5 19s 6d; heavy porkers, £6 2s 6d to £6 12s 6d. Average price per lb, Is Id to Is 3d. Choppers, £5 8s 6d to £ll 3s 6d; light baconers, £6 14s 6d to £6 19s 6d; medium baconers, £7 Is 6d to £7 6s 6d; heavy baconers, £7 8s 6d to £7 14s 6d. Average price per lb. 10id to Hid. STORE. PIGS. —Values for medium and large stores were easier by 5s to 6s a head. Weaners practically maintained last week’s rates. Values were: —Small weaners, 46s to 555; best weaners, 57s to 625; slips, 63s to 675; small stores, 58s to 78s; medium stores, 79s to 84s; large stores, 86s to 935.
