Sir —in your issue of Monday a news' item 'from Wellington reports a ship’s steward bemoaning tne fact that he would only receive £2O or £2j in tips this trip, and complaining that colonials are:—The worst tippers, dernand a lot of service, have big appetites, and sleep to excess Apart from this, it is to be presumed they are As a colonial I deeply resent the remarks of this steward. New Zealanders have a reputation all over the world for their good manners, and consideration for others. If the wages paid to this steward are not sufficient to pro- '• vide a decent livelihood without ! grovelling for tips from people who perhaps are worse off than himself, he . should consult his union secretary and I seek an improvement in his wages, in- ' stead of cringing and crawling m the ‘ dining room of the steamship Athentic. —Yours etc, SYD SHAND Brunner, November 3.
