RESCUE TEAMS TOIL TO SAVE TRAPPED MINERS

LONDON, September 26 (Rec 11.20 a.m.). —Rescue teams are toiling in an effort to reach three miners trapped in the Thornley colliery, in the county of Durham, as a result of a heavy fall of the roof. Following a period of silence, which led to fears for the men’s safety, the rescuers heard the trapped miners shouting this afternoon that they were all right and had satisfactory ventilation. The rescue squads expect to reach them tomorrow morning. By then they will have been imprisoned for at least 24 hours. Three men were drowned at the Thornley colliery in May by an inrush of water.
