OBITUARY Mr F. W. Furkert

WELLINGTON, September 26 (P.A.). —Mr Frederick William Furkert, a Wellington City Councillor and a former chief engineer and Under-Secie-tarv of the Public Works Department, died in hospital this evening. Mr Furkert, who was 72 years old, had been m hospital for many weeks. He was born at Ross, Westland, and educated at the Hokitika High School, Wellington College, and the University of Otago. He served in the Public Works Department for. 9 years, rising to head of the department before his retirement in 1942. His services with the department brought him in close association with large projects m New Zealand, such as the main trunk railway, the Otago irrigation scheme, the Otira tunnel, the Mangahae, Arapuni, and. Waikaremoana hydro-electric works, and the Tawa Flat deviation. Mr Furkert was one of the engineers who made the final report on improvements to West Coast harbours. A former president of the New Zealand Institute of Civil Engineers, Mr Furkert recently gave £5OO to found a scholarship in engineering. Mr Furkert held decorations of the Companion of St Michael and St George, awarded in 1926, and the Order of the Brilliant Star, a Chinese award made in 1947.
