HOCKEY FRIENDLY MATCHES WITH WOOLSTON
All club competition hockey matches set down for Saturday were postponed, although two friendly games with visiting teams from Christchurch were played at Nimmo Park Cobden. Pacific combined 4, beat Woolstdn 2, and Woolston 3 beat Cambridge 1. Although there was some surface water, the ground conditions were comparatively good, there being no uneven patches of mud. Both sides played good hockey m the Pacific v Woolston match. Although Pacific appeared to have the “edge” on their opponents in each department, both teams displayed sound combination and there were many excellent short passing movements. K. Kendon and G. Knapp were the best of the Pacific forwards, while G. Messenger and G. Swinburn were outstanding in the backs. Scorers for Pacific were Haines (2), G. Knapp and K. Kendon, and Upton and Malone scored for Woolston. Pacific won 4-2. A superior combination, particularly in the forwards, gave Woolston a 3-1 win over Cambridge combined in the second match at Nimmo Park. Cambridge were too inclined to play as individuals and did not successfully cope with the short' passing of the visitors. The goal shooting of both sides was accurate particularly that of the visitors, who scored an excellent goal from a penalty corner. G. Williams scored for Cambridge. Cobden And Rivals Draw Cobden and Rivals drew, there being no score, in a friendly hockey match played at Waimangaroa yesterday in muddv conditions. Rivals won the Buller club championship this season Rivals was more prominent in attack. but Cobden held the upper hand in defence and sidelplay. O’Brien was the best player for Cobden, defending well, and starting his forwards on several attacking moves. Boustridge also was in peak form. Tinnetti was outstanding for Rivals, whilst O’Keefe was a safe goalkeeper. . „ , , „ On Saturday, Cobden defeated a combined Community Centre-Wesley team by three goals to two. Westport, defeated Cobden Rangers by three goals to two.
