Two Prisoners Escape

Two prisoners escaped from the Mount Crawford prison, Wellington, early today. They stole a rowing boat and crossed the harbour to Pencarrow lighthouse. Strong police parties searched the surrounding areas throughout the day, without success. Patrols were sent to Eastbourne, Wainui, and the lower Wairarapa. The men’s absence from the prison was discovered just before 4 a.m., and when the rowing boat was missed from Karaka Bay, the police search was extended to the east side of the harbour. The boat was found later in the day floating near Pencarrow lighthouse. The men are Robert Bernard Howe, aged 28, and Oliver James Reece Bull, aged 25. Howe is serving a sentence for robbery with Violence. Bull is serving a sentence for breaking and entry with theft.—(P.A.)
