Awadale Finishes Fast

Little Jean, 13-12 in the betting, returned a dividend of more than £BO when she won the H. F. Nicoll Trotting Handicap. Little Jean was actually in front from the start but before half a mile had been run Globe Son raced to the lead and led for three furlongs. Little Jean, closely attended by Mamanuas then went to the lead, and she was first into the straight, with David Dryden in second place ahead of ’Bessie Grattan and Congressional. Little Jean trotted on soundly to win by two lengths from the favourite, Bessie Grattan which was two lengths ahead of Congressional and David Dryden. The winner went 4.29 2-5 from a 4.48 mark.

Good Performance Awadale, 5-4 in the betting, did not altogether recoup backers their losses for the day when he won the Pacific Handicap after a good performance. Great Wonder, Expensive, Sirocco, Hydro Belle and Air Mail all led Awadale in the early stages and at the straight entrance Sirocco had taken over the lead from Air Mail, the latter going to the front a furlong from home. Awadale came very fast from well back in the field and got up in the last few strides to beat Air Mail by a neck, with Allanah only half a length third. Sirocco was fourth. Warm Favourite Jack Peterson was heavily supported to win the Farewell Handicap and over the latter stages of the race he never left the issue in doubt. Gay Note, Wedding Ring, Magnificent, Darrington Hall and Jack Peterson were always in the running, and as the straight was reached the lastnamed raced up to the leaders and was in front a furlong from home. He came home with consummate ease and was nearly two lengths in front of Gold Strand as the winning post was reached. The time 2.40 from a 2.48 mark and the ease of the win made the performance a good one. Gold Strand \vas the only horse to offer serious opposition and he easily beat Gay Note for third. Magnificent was next to finish. The latter was unlucky in the running. Results:—
