Water invaded abou 30 houses, and also caused much damage to gardens. A gale accompanied by rain and hail, raged in the city on Friday evening and Saturday morning, affecting lines and causing pcwer interruptions. Air services from Dunedin were affected and passengers were brought south by car. The weather* improved yesterday, but conditions [were still wintry.— (F.A.) Trolley-Buses In Auckland • A new phase in Auckland’s transport system was inaugurated on Saturday, when trolley-buses replaced trams on the Herne Bay-city route. The new system aroused greater interest than had been expected, and early in the day it was found neces-1 sary to- put more vehicles on the run. Race crowds, football spectators, and sightseers from other suburbs, intent on trying out the new service, combined to form a greatei* travelling public than was usually found on this route on Saturdays. Comment on the new system was for the most part favourable. Travellers appreciated the smooth, silent running of the vehicles and the comfort of the upholstered seats. Rush-hour passengers, however, occasionally expressed impatience .when queueing to pay fares as they entered buses.—,(P.A.)
