FRIENDLY SOCIETIES IN DOMINION HAVE 77,000 MEMBERS
WELLINGTON, This Day (0.C.) —At the end of last year 874 friendly society lodges in New Zealand had a total of 77,134 members. This information is included in the annual report of the Registrar of Friendly Societies which states that the total funds of the societies and branches as at December 31, 1948, amounted to £6,568,039. The number of members sick during 1948 was 15,410, equal to 20.4 a hundred members at risk. The number who died during 1948 was 1192, equal to 15.2 a thousand members at risk. The number of wives of members who died was 320. The report flints the number o£ branches of each Order, the first being the Manchester Unity Independent Order of Oddfellows with 255, the Independent Order of Oddfellows with 195, the Ancient Order of Foresteres with 147, the United Ancient Order of Druids with 143, the Hibernian-Australasian Catholic Benefit Society with 80, and the Independent Order of Rechabites with 62. Altogether, twelve different Orders are listed.
