MINING BURSARIES AND SCHOLARSHIPS TO BE AWARDED

In an effort to increase the number of technical experts available for the coal-mining industry in New Zealand, the Mines Department has decided to award six coal-mining bursaries and Iwo travelling scholarships each year, the first award to be made for next year. Information to this effect has l been given the director of the Runanga School of Mines, Mr H. Hutchinson, by the Under-Secretary of Mines, Mr C. H. Benney. The scheme has been approved by the Minister of Mines, Mr A. McLagan. The six annual coal-mining bursaries will be awarded to .students taking the course leading to the degree of B.E. (mining) at the University of New Zealand. The first year of the course may be taken at any affiliated college of the University of New Zealand, provided the practical work done during the period following the intermediate examination is approved by the Dean and Faculty of Mines and Metallurgy, University of Otago, where the three succeeding years of the course must be taken. Each bursary will be of £75 per annum in the case of a student living at home during the academic year and £l5O to a student living away from home, while, in addition, the bursar’s examination and tuition fees will be paid. The bursary will extend for four years, being renewable each year, the tenure being dependent on favourable reports by the dean and mine managers, while a guarantee has to be given that the bursar will join the Mines Department staff for at least one year for each year of the bursary. The two travelling scholarships to be awarded each year will be worth £5OO per annum, though this amount will be reduced by the amount received for work which may be undertaken. Travelling expenses up to £5OO will also be paid, and the scholarship will have a tenure of two years. The successful students will study some aspects of coal-mining technology in one or more countries where education is under the control of a centre of higher education approved by the Council of the University of Otago. The scholars will be required to give an undertaking to accept employment with the New Zealand Mines Department, if called upon to do so, for a period of at least two years.
