IS MR NASH SEEKING MORE MONEY?

WELLINGTON, This Day (P.A.).— In the House of Representatives today, Mr W. A. Sheat (Oppn, Patea) gave notice to ask the Minister of Finance, Mr Nash, to clarify a report published today which quoted Mr Nash as saying that he had “to find a way of taking more money instead of less.” Mr Sheat asked if this could be accepted as an intimation that the tax rebate promised in the Budget would not be proceeded with or would be withdrawn after the election, and asked if the Minister contemplated a supplementary Budget before the close of the session providing for increased taxes? Mr W. Sullivan (Oppn., Bay of Plenty), drawing attention to a report that representatives of the deregistered Carpenters’ Union were visiting Auckland construction jobs and influencing tradesmen to leave their jobs, asked the Minister of Labour, Mr McLagan, to instruct that only officials of the registered union be permitted to visit construction works. Mr W. H. Gillespie (Oppn, Hurunui) gave notice to ask the Prime Minister if the Government would place before the House, in the form of a White Paper, its proposals for increased production which had not yet been disclosed to Parliament. Mr Gillespie said the Prime Minister was reported in today’s Labour daily, the Southern Cross, as having asked the Federation of Labour for full support for the Government’s comprehensive provisions for increased production. Mr Fraser replied to Mr Gillespie: “The honourable member will get all the information, much to his edification and education, when the Government’s policy is published.” N.Z. Debt To Britain WELLINGTON, This Day (P.A.). —New Zealand’s debt to Britain was unrepayable: It was more than money, said the Minister of Finance, Mr Nash, - addressing the United Kingdom Manufacturers’ and New Zealand Representatives’, Association yesterday afternoon. “Britain has spent millions to defend the British'way of'life, and we share in that and don’t pay anything like as much,” he said. “Britain is paying £l5. a head and we are planning to pay £9. “That means,” added Mr Nash with a smile, “that I have got to find a way of taking more money from you instead of less.”
