TIMBER SUBSIDY NEEDED, UNION SECRETARY SAYS

AUCKLAND, This Day (P.A.).— “This is™ not the time to curtail the production of timber,” declared the secretary of the New Zealand Timber Workers’ Union, Mr F. Craig, today, referring to the withdrawal of the Government’s overtime subsidy totally from exotic timber mills and partially from indigenous mills. He said that certain building lines, notably rimu and totara framing, flooring and weather boarding, were i-n short supply in Auckland. Mr Craig believes the subsidy on overtime should be continued. During 1948 a total of £117,000 was paid out of the Consolidated Fund to timber millers for overtime. Druing the overtime period 28,500,000 board feet of timber was produced.
