FOR FARMERS West Coast Steers Top Prices At Addington Market

CHRISTCHURCH, This Day (0.C.) —West Coast steers again topped the market at the Addington market at Christchurch yesterday, Sullivan Bros. (Fox Glacier) selling two at "£4O 2s 6d. The same vendors also made the best price for heifers, £3O ■ 12s 6d for two. Substantial yardings were forward in the main fat stock sections, but prices were nevertheless little below’ the levels of last week. Cattle were again firm, the best beef showing no change from ‘the high price, of last we^k - Prices for spring lambs were slightly easier, the big yarding giving buyers plenty of range. With the feed position reasonably assured, there was again an active bench of buyers for store sheep. Prices were firmer than last week’s. STORE SHEEP. —Prices were Tully firm to a little dearer than last week. The best woolly ewe hoggets made 53s to 60s, with the top price paid for an excellent line of even and'well-grown Corriedales. Good ewe hoggets made 40s to 47s 6d. Good wethers in the wool made to 44s 6d, and good shorn wether hoggets made 30s 6d to 37s 6d, with the best to 42s 3d. .p SPRING LAMBS—The yarding oi spring lambs at 145 was the largest oi the season.. While the large entry met a good sale the market was not quite as firm as it has been. The best spring lambs made from 49s to 53s id, good from 44s to 495, and others from 39s 7d to 43s FAT HOGGETS—The big offering was mainly shorn and was up to average quality. The top price for shorn hoggets was 59s 7d for nine from Graham (Leeston). Extra prime sorts realised from 52s to 59s 7d,- prime 42s to 51s, ordinary and light 30s to 40s. Among the few hoggets in wool, a line of eight sold at from 68s Id to 71s Id. FAT SHEEP—The bulk of the yarding was shorn. After a rather slow start, the sale became steady, and prices were fully up to those of last week for all classes, with light wethers perhaps a shade firmer. Values were: —Extra prime woolly wethers, to 77s Id; extra prime wethers, to 63s Id;, prime heavy wethers, 50s to 555; prime mediumweight wethers, 44s to 495; ordinary and light wethers, 38s to 435; extra prime woolly ewes, to 67s _ 7d; extra prime ewes to 56s Id; prime ewes, 43s to 475; prime medium-weight ewes, 38s to 42s 6d; ordinary and light ewes, 29s to 375. FAT CATTLE.—The big yarding was again of good quality, with some excellent consignments forward from Banks Peninsula and the West Coast. The sale began rather erratically, but at little below last week’s prices, and firmed later to fully last week’s rates. The best beef was as dear as it was last week, but secondary grades were slightly easier. Beet beef made 87s 6d per 1001 b, with some sales at 90s, good made 60s to 72s 6d, medium to 57s 6d, best cow to 755, and secondary cow to 455. Values w’re:—Extra prime heavy steers, to £4O 2s 6d; prime steers, £27 10s to £3l; prime medium-weight steers, £2O 10s to £27; ordinary and light steers, £l6 10s to £2O; extra prime heifers, to £3O 12s 6d; prime heifers, £l6 to £2l 10s; ordinary and light heifers, £lO to £l5 10s; extra prime cows, to £3O 12s 6d; prime cows, £l3 to £2l; Ordinary and' plain cows, £9 to £l2 10s. Williams (Fox Glacier), 4 heifers at £25 2s 6d to £3O 2s 6d, 2 cows at £26 7s 6d to £27 2s 6d 2 steers at £32 17s 6d, 5 steers at £32 7s 6d to £39 12s 6d, 2 heifers at £2B 17s 6d to £29 7s 6d; Sullivan Bros (Fox Glacier), 5 steers at £3B 7s 6d to £4O 2s 6d, 2 heifers at £3O 12s 6d, 1 cow at £25 12s 6d; Mrs R. Adamson (Wataroa), 8 steers at £27 7s 6d to £2B 7s 6d. VEALERS—The entry of vealers was slightly smaller than last week and was of average quality. Last week’s good rates were maintained. Prime large runners made up to £l5 8s 6d, with others £9 3s 6d to £ll 11s. Best suckers made £7 Ils to £lO 8s 6d, medium £4 11s to £6 13s 6d, large calves 46s to 61s, medium 32s to 455, and small and rough down to 18s. STORE CATTLE—The store cattle entry l was larger than Ahat of last week, but was again of ordinary quality except for a few pens. Competition was very keen for anything suitable to graziers, and prices for this type were slightly higher. DAIRY CATTLE.—For all cattle of good class the market was fully firm, and for the best there was a stronger market at up to £l. a head above last week’s rates. Best second, third, and fourth calvers made from £l5 to £lB 10s with two sales at £22 to £27, average made £ll to £l4 10s, inferior and rough down to £4 10s. Best heifers made £l4 10s to £1.9, with two sales at £2l and £23, medium made £lO to £l3 10s, and small and backward down to £6 10s. FAT PIGS.—The porker entry was practically twice the size of last week, and values were easier all round by 5s to 6s a head. Choppers were in much larger supply and the sale was a good one at prices fully on a par with last week's rates. In the bacon section the entry was also much larger, but competition was easier and prices were down 5s to 10s a head. Values were:— Light porkers, £4 6s 6d to £4 14s 6d; medium porkers, £4 19s 6d to £5 9s 6d; large porkers, £5 17s 6d to £6 9s 6d. Average price per lb, Is to Is 2d. Choppers, from £6 7s 6d to £l2 8s 6d; light baconers, £6 4s 6d to £6 12s 6d; medium baconers £6 14s 6d to £7 2s 6d; heavy baconers, £7 3s 6d to £7 9s 6d. Average price per lb, lOd to lid. STORE PIGS—The store pig entry was again a large one, but the quality was not quite as good as last week. Included in the entry were three sows in litters of 10 and 11, which made from £2l 10s to £3l. Values were:—Small weaners, 42s to 525; best weaners, 58s to 6’ss; slips, 68s to 735; small stores, 75s to 84s; medium stores, 86s to 925; large stores, 93s to 98s.
