Riccarton Horses For Wingatui: Impressive Trials

[SPECIAL TO STAR] CHRISTCHURCH, This Day.— Prince Defaulter and Marut, were companions in a gallop over six furlongs on the No. 6 grass track at Riccarton yedterday, and finished abreast in 1.16 3-5, the last four in 51 4-5. Just as the line was crossed, Prince Defaulter’s saddle slipped underneath him, and his rider, C. F. King, was thrown some distance and sustained a kick on the head. He was unable to ride again during the morning. Prince Defaulter careered round the course with the saddle dangling, and evaded all effort to apprehend him. He eventually jumped ope of the running rails and bolted into the stalls enclosure, and colliding with the corner of a building was brought to a .standstill. Prince Defaulter suffered a slight cut on his head, but otherwise had a miraculous escape from serious injury. He will not, however, make the trip to Dunedin. Magical was under a good hold m leaving five furlongsl behind in 1.5, the last three in 38 1-5. His next racing will be at Trentham. His stable-mates, Maryburn and the two-year-old Betula, are booked to race at Wingatui on Saturday only, and will return on Sunday. They are also to go on to Trentham. Terminus strode over five furlongs in 1.3 2-5, the last three in 38 1-5. He was nominated for two open events at Wingatui on Saturday,, and is to contest the October Handicap, one mile, in which he should be seen to advantage with 31b above the minimum'.

It is intended to turn him out on his-owner’s property until early next year, when he will be prepared for hurdle racing. He is. not engaged at Wingatui, and will probably race next at Washdyke, preparatory to another trip to Trentham. His younger half-sister, Placidity, by Lord Bobs, trained by T. H. Gillett, was given her first race this term in the Novice Stakes on Saturday, but lost any chance she had by playing up at the barrier, and being badly left. . , Valiant Prince indicated that he did not suffer any ill-effects from his fall at Ashburton by a fast display over two hurdles today. He was going well when he crashed, and . appeared certain to dispute the issue. ■He will have a chahce to make amends at Wingatui.
