SPORTING Maryburn May Win Again At Wingatui Meeting

. Maryburn, a six-vear-old Martarma gelding, returned to the winning list in the Ashburton Handicap last Saturday. He has been lightly raced, but on more, than one occasion has shown ability we 11 above the average. On Saturday he stayed on very solidly to hold off Dark Arrow'and Ihe extra furlong of the Ranfnrly Handicap at AVingafui on Saturday should not be beyond him.

Maryburn had been off the winning list for practically 12 months before the Ashburton meeting. His last success was at the Dunedin J.C. September meeting last year when he won the October Handicap of one mile from Balkis and Fine Night. It may . be that Ke will continue on his winning way on the same course on bat'urday, which will mark his only appearance at the Dunedin meeting. With gallant little Signal Officer at the top of the handicap with 10.6 the handicapper ' has. worked on a _ compressed scale of weights and such a good performer as Fine Night, for instance, finds himself in at the handy weight of 8.2. Fine Night was not in the picture at Riccarton last month, but his form of last season would make him a dangerous candidate on his home track on Saturday. Last season he won up to a- mile and a-naii as well as gaining place money against metropolitan company. He and Western Front, who now seems to have become more consistent, may be the ones to test Maryburn on Saturday.

Sir Peterson Sir Peterson carried on the Epsom tradition by winning the principal double. On no other course in New Zealand have the two-mile race, ana the sprint been won on the one day so frequently as at Auckland.

McLean Stakes Candidate Brutus, who is one of the most x°iward of the Dunedin-trained two-year-olds to contest the McLean Stakes, won the first division, of the parade at the Otago Hunt Club s meeting, when he scampered over cwo-ur-longs in 24 3-5. He is owned by Mr G. J. Barton, and is trained for him by J. W. Pankhurst at Wingatui.

Southland Sire , A recent addition to the ranks of Southland sires is Firelight, a four-year-old by Salmagundi from the Dunedin Cup winner Sparkle. He was bought for 2000 gns at the Chelandry Stud dispersal sale by Mr W. E. Hazlett, apd he has been secured by Mr A. F. Langford, who will stand him at South Hillend. Sparkle was a half-sis-ter to Flight, whose stake winnings oi

more than £30,000 are an Australian and New Zealand record for a mare. Sparkle’s dam, Lambent, was by Tractor from Dazzling Light, by Kilbroney from Simper. Firelight is a member of one of the most successful branches of the. famous Simper family, and interest will be shown in his stud career,

Poor Guineas Trial Western Winner, the outstanding South Island two-year-old last season, has not yet struck form. He has failed at Riccarton and Ashburton. In the Grigg Stakes he did not race with his customary dash, and was a good way back in the early stages. He made a dash wide out at the. top of the straight, but was dying at the furlong post. It was not a good Guineas trial. Related To Alma

The Grigg Stakes winner Swayup was bred by Mr L. C. Hazlett, of Dunedin. His sire, Sir Galloway, is by Paper Money from Green Cloth (The AceEquipment), Equipment was by Martian from Tomorrow, who was bred on the Musket —St Simon cross. Petacci, dam of ’Swayup, is by Defaulter from San Marino, whose lineage goes back to Solferino, Stepniak and Traducer, Swayup is closely related to Alma —a fine miler in her day. All-American Blood Flight Commander, who raced at Ashburton on Saturday, is a three-year-old colt by Light Brigade from Airflow and is raced by his breeder, Mr J. R. McKenzie. Flight Commander had his first race, in the Three-year-old Stakes at Addington last month, when he broke up inside the first furlong, losing all chance." His dam, Airflow, was a high-class trotting mare, taking a record for one mile and a half of 3.18 2-5. She is the dam of good performers in Scottish Air, Aerial Scott and Risingholme. Flight Commander has all-American blood, as both his sire and his dam were imported by JMr McKenzie.
