N.Z. Cricket Team Without Cash
PARIS, September 20 (Rec. 9.30 a.m.). —The devaluation of the pound sterling nearly resulted in Mr J. H. Phillips, manager of the New Zealand cricket team, being unable to pay the New Zealanders' hotel bill in Paris. An announcement was made that all'banks in Paris were closed temporarily, and for a time travellers’ cheques were, not cashed. .' ' ? .
The team arrived in Paris before the devaluation announcement and so had some money, but it was unable to secure all it required, and it was only through the New Zealand Legation advancing Mr Phillips sufficient to meet' requirements that irritating complications were avoided. Even so, members spent the day with no cash for shopping in their pockets.
