FILIPINO NEW PRESIDENT OF UNO ASSEMBLY

NEW YORK, Sept. 20 (Rec 1 p.m.) —General Carlos Romulo (Philippines) was elected President of the United Nations General Assembly when the fourth regular session opened today. Fifty-three votes were cast for him and five against by Russia, White Russia, the Ukraine, Poland and Czechoslovakia, who voted for Mr Clementis. General Romulo told the Assembly that the session coincided with a turning point in post-war international relations. “Though many formidable obstacles to world peace remain, the danger of a new war, which overshadowed the Paris deliberations a year ago, has greatly abated. We must press this advantage and move boldly forward,” he said. A statement was read from last year’s President, Dr Evatt, which said the United Nations occupied an established position in the sphere of international relations. It had grappled with acute political problems, sometimes with marked success, in Palestine, Greece, Indonesia, Korea and saved many thousands of lives.
