SCOTTISH GALLOWAY CATTLE: POSSIBILITY OF NEW BEEF STOCK
At the State animal research and experimental station at Invermay, North Taieri, it is hoped to develop new ■ strains of beef cattle, according to Mr G. A. Holmes, of the Department of Agriculture, who was recently appointed the station director, states an article in the Otago Daily Tinies. In a recent talk to members of the Otago Expansion League on the work it was hoped to carry out at the station, Mr Holmes said he would like to see Scottish Galloway cattle tried out on the property and crossed with the Black Poll. The Galloways, he said, were an extremely hardy type of beast, and should do particularly well on the second-class land which comprised such’ a large section of Otago and Southland. They could live on scant herbage, and could withstand the cold climate. The station director’s remarks concerning the suitability of Scottish Galloways are of particular interest to Otago in that recently two herds of this type of animal have been established from imported blood stock from Scotland. One is in Southland on the Mt. Linton Station and the other at Wanaka.
