SOLO FLIGHT AT 60
Although he is nearly 60 years of age Mr Brightwell, of Morrinsville felt no ill-effects from his first solo flight in a Tiger Moth aircraft at the Waharoa aerodrome. “It was an exhilarating experience,” he said, describing his five minutes at the controls. “I felt a little, nervous at first, but I soon got over it.” Mr Brightwell had his first lesson on March 6. Since then he has done 11 hours 20 minutes dual and solo flying. His instructor, Mr Robert Gummer, of the Piako Aero Club, was more than satisfied, with his pupil’s first attempt on his own. He said Mr Brightwell made a perfect circuit and landing. Although he had always been keen on flying, Mr Brightwell did not have 4he opportunity to .learn until quite recently. Whilg. other men of his age are obtaining recreation from a quiet game of bowls, Mr Brightwell intends taking a flight at least once a fortnight.
