QUEEN CARNIVAL WILL CLOSE UNDER "BIG TOP”
For those children who relish the strange fascination of the “big top” at the circus, the final two days of the Queen Carnival in Greymouth will offer a special attraction. There will be no circus, but there will be a tent. And it will compare in size with the big circus tent; ' To mark the closing days of the carnival it has been arranged to have a tent measuring 37ft by 109 ft erected on the old Town Hall site. Under its shelter there will be fun for all, young and old. The towering tent will entail hard work and care in the erection process. It will be hired from Johnson and Couzins, Ltd, Christchurch, who have offered to send a specialist over to supervise its erection. It will be hoisted on Thursday. “Dead-line” for the carnival is 9.30 o’clock on Saturday night of next week, and at that hour the winning Queen will be announced and also the amounts obtained by the various committees. That will be the close of the carnival, and on the following day the big tent will be removed from the Town Hall site, which, it seems, is suitable for many uses. Since the Town Hall .was burned down the site has been used for shop-day stalls, a temporary shop, display area for Army vehicles, and as an authorised parking area. Blaketown displaces Cobden at the head of the carnival, according to figures released by the central committee at midday today. The positions for the week are:—Blaketown 1, Cobden 2, United 3, Celtic 4, Star 5.
