TYPHOON SWEEPS JAPANESE AREAS: 47 KNOWN DEAD

TOKIO, Sept. 1. —Latest reports on a typhoon which swept Tokio and other areas of Japan yesterday say that 47 Japanese are known to have been killed and 10 others are missing. Yokohama harbour is reported to have suffered the worst damage since it was opened to trade. Seven .ships were sunk and 10 other vessels were stranded, including four of more than 7000 tons each. Other ships were damaged in collisions. No casualties have so far been reported on the ships sunk. The damage in the Gumma Prefecture alone, where rice paddies were extensively flooded, is estimated at more than £1,000,000. Wind gusts during the typhoon reached a velocity of 80 miles an hour. The wind flattened fences, uprooted trees and destroyed nearly 2000 flimsy houses.
