BOY DROWNED IN WAIHOU RIVER: CANOE CAPSIZES

THAMES, This Day (P.A.).— A drowning accident occurred in the Waihou River yesterday afternoon. Two boys, Roger Kent, aged 12, and Colin Nicholson, aged 14, went sailing in a canoe. Some time afterwards the canoe capsized, and the boys were seen in difficulties. Another boy, Kaels Watene, secured a small boat and went to their rescue. He reached Nicholson who att tempted to scramble aboard but overturned the boat. Hearing calls for help, a settler, Mr W. S. Gray, and a boy, Eddie Watene, a brother of Kaels Watene, rushed to the boys assistance. They managed to rescue Nicholson and Watene, both in a state of exhaustion, but Kent had disappeared.
