Honours Go To Star: One-round Competition

Star, playing vigorous football, won the senior one-round competition in the main match at Rugby Park on Saturday defeating Blaketown by two converted tries, 10 to 0. The game opened at a fast pace and continued in that manner until the final whistle. The ground was slippery after rain. There was a fair attendance.

The Star backs outclassed their opponents and looked dangerous whenever in possession. Blaketown forwards were superior but lacked the fitness of the lighter Star pack. At half-back for Star, L. McDougall sent away, good passes which W. Hayton playing at first fiveeighth, took at speed. Hayton was the best Star back and he received good support from his second five-eighth N. Hopkins. M. McDonald, at second five-eighth for Blaketown, was the best of the back-line, which did not function smoothly. Blaketown forwards, led by A. Panther won the majority of scrums but the line-outs were even.

Scoring Movements From the kick-off. Star backs looked dangerous. The forwards broke away in a loose rush from the 25 which Blaketown failed to stem effectively and from a melee-on the line D. Brien scored. The try was converted by A. Hines. . At half-time the score was Star o, Elaketown 0. Both sides set up strong attacking moves in the second half, but some solid defensive play kept the score down. Although Blaketown forwards were gaining ground by loose rushes the Star pack fought back and 10 minutes from time in a determined rush crossed the Blaketown line. W. Beardsley scored and Hines converted. Blaketown were now pressing but could not penetrate the Star defence and the game ended Star 10, Blaketown 0. . The referee was Mr A. Lindbom.
