Man Dies After Fall

An elderly man received fatal injuries when he fell down a flight of steps at a house in Freeman’s Bay, Auckland, on Thursday evening. He was Thomas Ryan, aged 79, a widower. Ryan fractured his neck in the fall and died before he could be admitted to hospital.—(P.A.)

Launch Aground On Reef Marooned for a wet night after a siene fishing launch, the Olive, had grounded on a reef off Crusoe Island, between Waiheke and Motuihi, Donald Tomlinson and his brother brought the motor-ship Baroona to their rescue by lighting a fire and waving their shirts in the air. Rain squalls had reduced visibility when the Olive ran aground. After rowing 300 yards to the island in the launch’s dinghy the brothers found no shelter, and they had no protect-, ive clothing. Driftwood was used for a fire that helped to attract the Baroona’s attention. The ship hoveto and the brothers rowed out to it’in their dinghy.—(P.A.)
