CIVIL SERVANTS LEAVE CANTON FOR CHUNGKING
HONG KONG, August 19 (Rec 1 p.m).—The Chinese Government has agreed to allow the steamer General Gordon to enter Shanghai to evacuate American nationals, says the official Central News Agency. The Nationalists recently closed all Communistheld ports to. shipping. A Canton message says . that 50 per .pent, of Government civil servants have already evacuated Canton to Chungking or Formosa. Another 30 per cent, are said to be going in the next few days. The remainder, however, will stay as long as possible. The battle news today is that the Communists are within 30 miles of Lanchow, the provincial capital of Mansu province. In Eastern Hunan, the Communists are reported to have captured Anjen, 45 miles, from Hengyang.
