TRADES COUNCIL SUPPORT FOR TRIDALE STRIKE

CHRISTCHURCH, August 19 (P.A.). —Mr A. B. Grant (secretary) stated tonight that the Canterbury Trades Council has decided to support the striking Canadian seamen on the Tridale which has been delayed at Wellington for several weeks. He stated it did so “after considering a cablegram from Harry Bridges, president of the International Longshoremen’s and Warehousemen’s Union, and a subsequent letter from the Pacific Coast Labour Relations Committee about the strike of the Canadian Seamen’s Union (of which the Tridale’s crew are part). The Trades Council had resolved without dissent to support the crew of the Tridale in their action, said Mr ’ Grant. The resolution would be sent to the New Zealand Federation of Labour, and to the crew of the Tridale. This question was mentioned at a Trades Council meeting a fortnight ago. It was decided to seek additional information from “an American spokesman of good repute,” and Mr Bridges was chosen, and-his cablegram said the crew of the Canadian Seamen’s Union deserved support.
