CANTERBURY TEAM BEATS SOUTHLAND
CHRISTCHURCH, August 17 (P.A.) —ln one of the brightest representative games played in Christchurch for some years, Canterbury beat Southland by 21 points to 11. The weather was fine, with a light drizzle in the second spell. The ground was fast. Passing by the Canterbury backs broke down at the centre but Kitchingham was on hand to score a good try. Stuart converted it. Southland equalised when 'Guttrey passed to Smeaton, who badly beat the defence. Miller converted. Kitchingham again scored; and Stuart converted. The half-time score was Canterbury 10; Southland five. Good passing by the backs ended in Herman scoring for Cjenterbury. Jones later charged down a kick by Miller and scored. Stuart converted this try A making the score 18-5. In a fine passing rush, Smeaton kicked for. Inder to snap up the ball-and score a good try for Southland. In a passing rush, Harper cut in and sent Smeaton over for a brilliant try. Argus scored the final try for Canterbury, after a passing rush, in which all the backs had handled.
Buller Forward In N.Z. Final Trial Team WELLINGTON, August 17 (P.A.).— The New Zealand Rugby team to play Horowhenua at Levin on September 1 was announced this evening. The match will be the final' trial for the selection of the New Zealand team to play Australia. The team is:— Full-back: G. J. Moore (Otago). Wing three-quarters: W. Argus (Canterbury and J. McLean (Auckland). Centre three-quarters: J. B. Smith (North Auckland). Five-eighths: Second, R. Dobson (Auckland); first, B. Couch (Wairarapa). Half-back: V. Bevan (Wellington). Back row: D.
