Deep-sea Diving Attempt Fails

A marine explorer, Mr Otis Barton, failed today in an attempt to descend 6000 feet into the ocean off Santa Cruz Island, California. He was trying to break the world record for diving. Mr Barton was lowered to a depth of 2300 feet, but generator trouble on his barge at the surface left him without lights in his steel benthoscope. He ordered his associates to haul him up. Mi’ Barton said the worst part of the dive was a feeling that the clivingbell was tipping over—a sensation caused by lack of oxygen. He added that he would make another attempt when the trouble had been remedied. Mr Barton is 48. He is an engineer, and lives in Boston—New York, August 15.
