TWO SACKS OF RAW OYSTERS CONSUMED BY COAST TOURISTS

[SPECIAL REPORTER] INVERCARGILL, This Day.—The West Coast Rugby team, on Monday followed the example of numerous other Rugby teams which have endeavoured to make an impression on the stocks of raw oysters at Bluff. Without approaching the records of “great” teams of the past the West Coast visitors acquitted themselves quite well. Arriving at Bluff, the most southern town in New Zealand shortly before three o’clock.. the West Coast team—or, at least, the majority of mexh-

bers—spent the next two hours disposing of two sacks of raw oysters, wnich had been landed the previous day. and other refreshments. In the traditional manner, the visitors were the guests of the Southland Rugby Union and the Bluff Rugby Football Club in the “oyster bar” at the Eagle Hotel, Bluff. The appetites of various members of the team varied. The best eater put away about 14 dozen raw oysters without any trouble. Next on the list was a forward, who consumed about nine dozen. The quantities consumed, however, tapered sharply after this. While no member of the team approached the visiting team record set by a member of the Marlborough team, J'. Bragg, two seasons ago—he consumed 22 dozen—the overall total was stated to be more than fair, considering that some restrictions had to be applied in view of the match with Southland Sub-Unions today.

ALL BLACKS’ TOUR A FINANCIAL SUCCESS •

CAPE TOWN, August 16.—The three All Blacks matches at Ellis Park brought Johannesburg in a total revenue of £52,000, according to a provisional statement- submitted to a meeting of the Transvaal Rugby Union. The president of the union, Mr H. J. Sanderson, said it afforded tremendous satisfaction that an international match . had been won through real Rugby, as was seen last Saturday. He thought it appeared at one stage that South African Rugby was slipping back, but last Saturday’s game had given pleasure to all followers of the sport, who would have been satisfied whichever way the result had gone. “New Zealand helped us to build Ellis Park in 1928, and now they have helped us to expand it,” he said. Mr J. H. Parker, the New Zealand manager, in congratulating the union for its organisation for the second test, also praised the crowd for its behaviour and sportsmanship. “We in New Zealand did not realise how tremendous is the interest in Rugby in South Africa,” he said. “This tour has been a great success for you. Apart from football, I think the tour has increased the goodwill between our two countries. We will look forward to beating you when you visit New Zealand in 1954. It is a tough job to beat you in South Africa. I do not think that anyone will accomplish that task with case.”
