Objection To Schools As Polling Booths

AUCKLAND, This Day (P.A.).— After debating the use of schools as polling booths, the Auckland Education Board decided today to ask the Minister of Education, Mr T. H. McCombs, to see that in future returning officers carry out his instructions. Mr D. W. Rutledge said that at the recent referendum many schools had been commandeered, while some returning officers did not take the trouble to see if private halls were available. “The returning officers have the power to commandeer schools, but cannot commandeer lirivate halls,” Mr Rutledge added. The chairman, Mr G. K. Hamilton, said that although many returning officers made earnest endeavours, others apparently ignored important instructions. . ”
