LUNAR INFLUENCE IN “BUILDINGUP MOUNTAINS”

DUNEDIN, This Day (P.A.).-CThe theory that the lunar influence responsible for the rise and fall of the tides is also responsible for the formation of mountains is held by Dr C. Trechman, noted British geologist. Interviewed today, Dr Trechman, who is the last of the overseas scientists remaining in New Zealand from the Pacific Science Congress, said his theory had been scorned by the British scientific magazine Nature as “impossible and untenable.” His theory was not to be accepted in scientific circles because it ran contrary to what was taught in the universities, said Dr Trechman, but he was gradually building up more evidence to show that the mountain uplift was caused by the pull of the moon and the pressure of the columns of water in the ocean.

“It is the only possible explanation why an island like Jamaica has been gradually built up out of the sea,” he said. . “The force which makes the mountains is the same force that acts on the tides. It acts on the land, though we do not perceive it until we get to breaking point.” The earthquake was given by Dr Trechman as an example of what happened when breaking point was reached.
