Newspaper's Future

Every so often rumours race around Wellington to the effect that the capital’s morning Labour newspaper, the Southern Cross, is about to cease publication, writes a Wellington correspondent. The bush telegraph is at it again, and this time the story is that, irrespective of whether Labour wins or loses the election, the Southern Cross will go out of existence inside a month after polling day. According to these sources, Labour Party officials are seriously concerned because the paper continues to be a losing proposition financially. On the other hand, other Labour men consider that the paper would be of most value to the party in the event of a defeat being suffered at the polls.
