British-Argentine Talks
The British meat negotiations with the Argentine appeared tonight to be close to success. An official of the Argentine Foreign Office said: “The negotiations are going on quickly now. We await a reply from the British Government.” The Buenos Aires correspondent of the New York Times says he believes that the price agreement will involve a sliding scale, under which the price will vary within a set range as Argentina agrees to accept certain luxury goods among its imports from Britain. In other words, the more luxury goods Argentina accepts, the more Britain will pay for its meat. Argentina appears to have reached nowhere in its demand for the convertibility of sterling. The British consider that the new meat pact will be historic to the extent that it will acknowledge inconvertibility for the first time in a trade agreement.—Buenos Aires, May 18,
