English girls learning to become “model domestic servants at a Got-ernment-sponsored school at Newcastle on Tyne have been warned.— “This is no apprenticeship for marriMinistry of Labour opened this institute of houseworkers recently because of the shortage of efficient serV before the girl students are issued :yitli a green and biege uniform they have to give an undertaking to Mrs Mary Davidson, the principal, to go nto service after “graduating and to spread the spirit of good housekeeping wherever they go. . “A number of girls- whom I interviewed,” Mrs Davidson told a reporter, “gave me the impression that they wanted to take the course as an ap : prenticeship for marriage. I refused ;o take them. • “The girls have all been told that wc are not training them for fun—so that men can snap them up as ready-made wives when they finish their time here,”
