NAMING OF BULLER HOSPITAL WARD FOR CHILDREN CRITICISED

Criticism of the board’s action in naming the children’s ward at the Buller Hospital after “someone who had been absent from the district for some 12 or 14 years and who had been a member of the board for only a short period” was voiced by Mr W. H. Mclntyre, M.L.C., when a letter was received at the monthly meeting of the Buller Hospital Board from Mrs Agnes Foreman, of Adelaide (daughter of the late Mr and Mrs H. E. Holland), acknowledging the compliment of having the children’s ward at the Buller Hospital named after her. In asking that his name be dissociated from the resolution concerning the name, Mr Mclntyre said it. was an insult to many women still living at Westport. He felt that the honour might have gone to one of the women who worked so hard to provide the children’s ward. Mrs C. Strang rose to a point of order and said that the motion had already been carried naming the ward after Mrs Foreman. Mr Mclntyre claimed that this was the only opportunity he had had to speak on the matter, as he had beep absent when the motion was carried. He went on to demand to know on what grounds the board had reached its previous decision. The matter was allowed to lapse after Mrs Strang had said that the matter had been decided at a regular meeting and that there would be no good in prolonging the argument.
