AKAHURA DREDGE WORKERS PRAISED FOR RESCUE EFFORTS
The action of the deceased’s workmates who boarded and searched the dredge, although they knew the risk entailed, with the dredge in a precarious position, was commended by the Coroner, Mr R. Paterson, at the conclusion of the inquest at Hokitika yesterday, concerning the death of Frederick Lester Tuhuru,, aged 27, married, who was the victim of the Arahura dredge sinking. - , , , The Coroner also'paid a tribute to the management of the dredging company for their efforts to recover the body. A verdict was returned that Tuhuru died as a result of accidental drowning while working on the gold dredge. The Coroner added that Tuhuru was apaprently trapped in the rush of water when the dredge listed, and his body was released by a surge caused by the fall of gravel into the pond on April 12. A verdict was returned that Edward Brown, aged 67, of Blue Spur, was found dead on April 27 at his home at Blue Spur, as a result of haemorrhage from throat wounds self-inflicted while in a state of mental depression.
