PLANS FOR HOKITIKA WATER SUPPLY SCHEME COST £600

More than £6OO had been spent on reports and surveys, all of which had proved practically useless, it was stated at the monthly meeting of the Hokitika Borough Council on Wednesday evening, when advice was received from Mr J. B. Kent, M.P., that the Public Works Department’s engineers did not appear to have been supplied with plans and specifications of the proposed Lake Kaniere water supply scheme for Hokitika. He asked that all the data be forwarded immediately. Cr S. Roberts said the original motion was to get the reports and then apply to the Loans Board. It was agreed to advise Mr Kent that the Public Works Engineer. (Mr A. B. Bremner) had received all the reports, and the final report was in the making. It was 1 decided to ask the Housing Department that, if it did not intend to use the area recently acquired for building State houses the area be returned to the council, and it could then be cut up and sold for building sections. The recently-appointed engineer (Mr P. Johnstone) reported that several streets were in bad condition and required a good coating of gravel to improve them. As soon as arrangements could be made with the County Engineer for the hire of the grader, a start would be made. , After complaints had been voiced by several members, the council decided that a drive against cyclists who ride at night without light be undertaken by the traffic inspector. The Mayor, Mr A. E. Perry, presided, and also present were Crs S. G. Havill, D. D. Lyness, H. C. Peart, E. W. Heenan, S. J. Roberts, L. b. Ross and I, J- Preston.
