300 ATTEND TE KINGA FUNCTION: STOREKEEPER MET

Mr W. Lowe, who has been storekeeper at Te Kinga for the past 20 years, will leave on Saturday for Huntly, where he has acquired a business. On Saturday evening, Mr and Mrs Lowe and Miss D. Lowe were the guests of honour at a social evening held in the Te Kinga hall and - attended by some 300 people from all parts of the Otira line district, and including a party from Greymouth. Regret at the impending departure of Mr and Mrs Lowe was expressed by several speakers, including Mr R.. Coleman, the president of the Te Kinga Residents’ Association, which organised the function. Others to refer to Mr Lowe’s popularity and work on behalf of the district and district sports bodies and organisations were Messrs R. Abbott, C. James, R. Stevens, D. Price and F. L. Turley. A presentation of an envelope of notes was made to Mr Lowe, who replied on behalf of himself and his family, indicating their reluctance to leave. the district and the; West Coast.

Occasion was also taken to greet Mr J. Spillane of Christchurch, who will be' Mr Lowe’s successor in the Te Kinga store.
