HIGHER LICENCE FEE FOR GAME SHOOTING SEASON
As a result of the 1949 amendment to the Animals Protection and Ggme Act, duck shooters on the West Coast will have to pay more for their licences for the season which is to commence on May 7. For the taking of native game only, the type of licence issued on the West Coast, the fee has been increased from 12s fid to 15s. Advice of the amendment was received at the monthly meeting of the council of the Grey District Acclimatisation Society, at which Mr E. Logie presided over a good attendance. Another amendment to the Act provides for more stringent control of automatic shotguns for the new season. It is now provided that automatic guns must have a rivet inserted when used for game shooting, to prevent more than two cartridges being fired at a loading, and to prevent the gun from being readily converted to a repeater. Previously, it was sufficient to have a temporary plug inserted.
The Nelson Society advised that permission had been granted for the Grey Society to trap quail in its district and offered to give any assistance possible. It was decided to thank the Nelson society for its co-operation but to take no action pending receipt of a reply to the inquiry sent to the wildlife division of the Department of Internal Affairs on the matter.
The Otago Society advised that it had obtained six mallard duck for liberation in the Grey district and that they would be forwarded at an early date.
It was decided to hold the annual meeting of the society during the last week in May.
