INTEREST IN PRINCESS’S VISIT TO ITALY
(Recd. 9.15 a.m.) ROME, April 25. Interest in Princess Margaret’s visit to Italy has been rising during the past few days, the public following with particular avidity the details, of the controversy on whether the Princess should visit the Pope.
Huge crowds are expected. at Naples airport to catch the first sight of the Princess when she alights on Italian soil. Hundreds of extra police and carabinieri are being assigned to protect the Princess and her party. The Princess will have her first Italian meal at Naples. Unofficial sources in Vatican City said that a visit by Princess Margaret to the Pope would be pleasing to the Vatican, where she would be received with all the honours due to her rank. The Associated Press says that these sources recalled that Protestants in Britain had almost prevented the meeting of King Edward VII with Pope Leo XIII. Theirs had been the first such meeting since the Reformation. Pope Pius XI received Their Majesties King George V and Queen Mary in 1923. His Majesty'King George VI, who visited Italy in 1944 to inspect British troops, did not visit the Pope.
