Improvement At Shanghai
(Rec. 12.25 p.m.) SHANGHAI, April 25.
Chinese dispatches tonight said the overall picture for Shanghai and environs was, comparatively, improving, following the arrival of Nationalist reinforcements from other parts of Kuomintangcontrolled areas, including the island fortress of Taiwan.
A local report said that about 15,000 American-trained and equipped Nationalists arrived in Shanghai today from Formosa.
The latest • reports on the war front along the NankingShanghai railway said that fierce fighting raged this afternoon at Hsuszekwan, five miles west of Soochow. On the other fronts along the lower reaches of the Yangtse and eastern bank of Taiho lake, the Nationalists are said to 'be holding their positions firmly. The British Admiralty announced in London that the cruiser Jamaica has been ordered to the Far East from Bermuda.
