Half An Egg
[SPECIAL TO STAR] WELLINGTON, This Day. Wellington housewives, who had practically no eggs for Easter, were issued with a ration of only half an egg per person for the week-end. For many thousands who live alone this caused an insoluble problem. The Evening Post carried a four-column cartoon depicting ithe Minister ( of Industries and Commerce, Mr Nordmeyer, selling eggs to housewives and asking, “Which half will you have, madam, the yolk or the white?” In some shops people with priorities were lucky enough to receive half a dozen eggs, but the experience of one man was typical. He paid for them at the rate of nearly 4d each, and when he got home found they were little bigger than pigeons’ eggs.
