ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL WINS FOR GREYMOUTH AND BLACKBALL IN OPENING MATCHES

The opening matches in the Westland Football Association’s 1949 season were played at Taylorville, Reefton and Cobden on Saturday and,' judged by the standard of play, the association seems assured of a successful season. All matches were keenly contested. Results of senior matches played on Saturday were as follows: — Greymouth 5, defeated Taylorville 3; Blackball 2, defeated Reefton 0; Cobden 4, drew with -Runanga 4. Greymouth, after being down by three goals to one at half-time, rallied to defeat Taylorville comfortably by five goals to three An the match played at Taylorville. In the first spell, Greymouth’s defence was inconsistent and the Taylorville forwards, combining well, scored three fairly easy goals. There was a noticeable improvement in the second spell, however, and Taylorville was held at bay. The match was fairly evenly contested, with Taylorville more than holding its own in the first stage of the game. ' Goals were scored for Greymouth by Pallet (2), Lacy (2) and Boyd, while Kirk netted all three fpr Taylorville. Outstanding players for the winning team- were D. Tolchard (goal), Marshall and Tones (fullbacks) and Boyd (forwards). For Taylorville, Bernard and Brain (fullbacks), Kirk and E. Dando (forwards) were the pick. Playing at Reefton, the Blackoall team had a close victory by two goals to nil over the local team, while the match played at the Cobden Domain between Cobden and Runanga resulted in a draw. Match At Reefton In the match played at Reefton on Saturday, Blackball defeated Reefton by two goals to nil. Blackball s goals were scored by Philip and Allen. From the outset Reef ton set a hot pace and a spirited first half resulted. Although defeated, the Reefton team worked hard, but its positional play’and ball control was inferior to that of tne visiters. Walbridge, the Reefton goalkeeper, was outstanding and played a clever and resourceful game. At full-back. Fraser and Taylor tackled well, but their clearing kicks were not strong. McLaren was prominent in a forward line that lacked combination and shooting power. For Blackball, Morgan was sound at full-back. Balderstone, at centre-half, saw that his forwards got plenty of the ball and McGuire, was always prommThe Blackball forwards were evenly balanced and played well throughout.
