THIEVES TAKE ALMOST £2000 FROM AUSTRALIAN HOTEL
MELBOURNE, March 14.
A four-gallon oil drum containing 10,000 florins and a paper bag in which were a further 500 florins were stolen from a locked cupboard in the Rifle Brigade Hotel, Bendigo. Notes and small change stolen brought the total to nearly £2OOO. Detectives think the drum was carried to a waiting car and driven to Melbourne. The hoarded florins were the property of the father of the licensee, who had the habit of saving them.
Eendigo is filled with visitors for the Bendigo Thousand professional foot-race and a big cycling carnival to be held over Australia Day weekend. Thieves also stole £BOO from the home of a bookmaker.
