CRICKET Cobden Defeat Marist To Win Championship

With ihree teams having chances of winning the competition, play was keen when the final matches in the West Coast Cricket Association’s senior championship competition’ wore played under ideal conditions yesterday. Cobden, by gaining a first-innings victory over Marist at the Recreation Ground, won the title. United secured a 10-point win over Blackball, at Blackball, to he runners-up. Points won in the competition were as followsCobdon, -10; United, 39; Blackball, 32; -Marist, 9.

Friendly matches were also played in the senior reserve grade, the competition having concluded the previous week-end. Runanga the competition winner, with United runnerup.

SENIOR GRADE COBDEN’S VICTORY

A brilliant century by D. Knapp was the outstanding feature of the Cobden team’s batting display in the senior match against Marist at the Recreation ground yesterday. Knapp batted soundly, scoring from strokes all round the wicket. His total (retired of 113), included 15 fours and two sixes. Cobden scored 194 runs lor the loss cl' four wickets, thus defeating Marist by 26 runs on the first innings. S. Garforlh was the outstanding Marist batsman and his score of 87 was a good contribution to his team’s total of 168 runs. With one wicket down for 125 runs at the luncheon adjournment, Marist appeared to be in a good position but wickets fell quickly when play was resumed in the afternoon. O. Morris (17), T. Dennehy and R. Methven (15) and F. Rush (12) were other double figure scorers lor Marist.

D. Dewar was Cobden’s best bowler, his 12 overs, six of which were maidens, costing only 13 runs for four wickets. D. Knapp also bowled consistently for Cobden to take five wickets for 82 runs, off 27 overs. Apart from Knapp, none, of the other Cobden batsmen struck form, although A. Knapp (22) and A. United secured a 10point victory over Blackball to be runners-up to Cobden in the senior competition. Good batting and bowling figures were registered when United defeated Camerons in a senior reserve match at the Recreation Ground yesterday afternoon by 58 runs on the first innings. Batting first, United scored 183 runs (Leitch 44, Anderson 29, Devonport 25, West 22; Moar four for 49). In reply, Camerons was dismissed for 125 runs (J. Calder, sen., 37, T. Hibbs, sen., 31; Taylor six for 34, Anderson three for 46).

JUNIOR MATCHES' CENTURY TO CURNOW

A century (undefeated) by J. Curnow for Grey Motors was the highlight of the junior match between Grey Motors and Marist Old Boys at the Recreation ground on Saturday afternoon. Curnow scored 101 (not out) of his team’s total of 158 runs. In its first innings Marist was dismissed for 92 runs, and for 78 in the second innings. Grey Motors scored the necessary number of runs for an outright victory without the loss of a wicket. WEST COAST TEAM CHOSEN FOR SATURDAY’S MATCH The following West Coast team has been chosen by the selectors, Messrs W. Meates, H.
