SPORTING Broughton Rides Five Winners At Trentham: Lord Manna’s Success

[SPECIAL TO STAR]

WELLINGTON, This Day._

W. J. Broughton’s feat in riding five winners in eight mounts, the brilliant victory of Lord Manna in,the President’s Handicap, and the successes of Voltaic in the Challenge Stakes and Demonic in the Hutt Handicap were the outstanding features of the concluding day of the Wellington Racing Club’s autumn meeting at Trentham on Saturday. Lord Manna’s success was his sixth in consecutive races and the manner of his victory on Saturday stamped the son of Robin Goodfellow and Lady Manna (imp.) as an outstanding stayer. The open sprint was won by Trenecre at odds of nearly two score, lhe Defaulter mare was ridden by the Orari jockey, W. D. Skelton (formerly of Cobden).

Frances made all the pace in the President’s Handicap until the turn for home where she.was closely attended by Gay Stroller, with King’s Ransom, Royal Tan, Langham, Money Lender and Avenger all starting to put in their claims. A furlong from the post Frances was still in front from Royal Tan, Avengei' and Langham, with Lord Manna continuing a strong run, and King’s Ransom next. Lord Manna came on to win very decisively and in a photo finish King’s Ransom beat Royal Tan on the post. The Grate finished fast in fourth place ahead of Avenger. Swanee, Lord Revel, Langham and Frances were next.

The Thompson Handicap winner, Demonic put up a fine performance in winning the Hutt Handicap with the steadier of 9.6, thus completing a double for the meeting. Half a mile from home Demonic was a long way back, but he came with a well sustained run on the rails to take the lead with a furlong to go and win with a good deal in hand. Julius Caesar led into the straight from Corofin, Gollen, Veine d’Or and Da Vinci, with Demonic coming through on the inner. When the leaders swung wide Demonic shot through on the fence and the race was all over half-way down the straight. Demonic won without being extended by three lengths from Veine d’Or with Gollen a close third. Then came Bonnie Fair, Julius Caesar Master Dash and Yasda. This was Demonic’s, fourth win this season.

First-class Sprinter Voltaic, twice winner of the Wanganui Jackson Stakes, added the North Island Challenge Stakes to his impressive sprint record at weight-ier-age, when he downed excellency and Citril over the seven-furlong journey. Voltaic and Excellency followed Citril to the last furlong where Voltaic took the lead and won attractively from Excellency, who made no impression on the Revelation gelding over the concluding stages. Citril was a good third after making all the pace with the champion three-year-old Tauloch beaten off, three lengths away. Tauloch did not appear to be galloping freely and the Balloch colt was never a likely winner. The Hastings-trained Tveneere was handy all the way in the Suburban Handicap and she took the lead a furlong from home to win decisively from the fast-finishing Swift Robin, with The Pagan beating Wild Note by a head for third. Full Play was a close fifth and then came Red Pickle, False Step and Super Vaals. Swift Robin put up a good performance after being one of the last away. The first-day highweight winner, Ivanhoe, a three-year-old Balloch gelding trained by Mrs L>. Campbell and J. H. Jefferd at Ngatarawa, won the Second Autumn Maiden Handicap (non-totalisator) with an irrestible run from the back of the field. The first-day winner, Sweepstake, was a good second.

Unlucky Runner What appeared to be an error of judgment on the part of his rider, M. Martinovich probably cost Lord Foxbridge the Pacific Handicap. Lord Foxbridge was going strongly at the head of the field three lengths clear, with only a furlong to run, but Abbotslord, finished fast inside the last 100 yards and won in the last stride. Abbotsford is by Tweed II from that grand race mare Cuddle. Outlook an attractive chestnut colt by Robin Goodfellow from Red Cat won his second race for the meeting when he prevailed in a tight finish with Ngarobi in the Belmont Handicap. Outlook came on the scene late and just got up in the last stride to nose Ngarobi out of the major hon-

ours. Determination was half a head away third and then came Vane Master and Master Fox.

The totalisator turnover for the day was £192,855, compared with £198,919 on the corresponding day last year. The total for the meeting was £360,569 10s as against £379,276 last year, a decrease of £18,706 10s. Remaining results:— North Island Challenge Stakes, of £2000; seven furlongs.—3 Voltaic 9.1 G. R.
